Stowell Concrete originally
developed two designs* of large-unit interlocking hollow
blocks, known as MACRO blocks. These are manufactured
for use in the construction of agricultural or industrial
retaining walls. Additionally MACRO blocks have been
utilised in the construction of aggregate storage bays,
retaining walls, temporary barricades and low walls into
which temporary fencing can be inserted.
MACRO blocks can be built up with or without mortar between
the layers. The voids can then be left empty or filled
with aggregates, soil or reinforced concrete, depending
on the application and whether the structure is temporary
or permanent.
MACRO blocks can be installed using a lorry-mounted crane
fitted with a block grab, or a fork truck or a crane equipped
with a grab suitable for moving blocks around sites.
MACRO blocks are manufactured
using 7.3 N/mm2, 1950kg/m3 concrete mix.
Two-void MACRO blocks weigh approximately 550kg each,
while four-void MACRO blocks weigh approximately 625kg
each.
MACRO blocks have vertical scoring which breaks up the
expanse of concrete and helps disguise the joints between
the units when built.
Four-void MACRO blocks are designed to aid splitting
along their length using a 300mm diameter diamond blade
disc cutter and a bolster chisel.
* additional designs
could be created depending on the degree of demand.
